From one of the Mosel's most legendary vineyards: the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a steep, south-facing slope of blue Devonian slate named for the sundial ('Sonnenuhr') a 19th-century grower built so his pickers could tell the time. Dr. Loosen owns old ungrafted vines here, some over a century old, farmed without irrigation and fermented with native yeast. At Kabinett ripeness, the wine is lightly sweet but so charged with slate-driven acidity that it tastes almost dry — delicate, filigreed and built to age for decades. This is a grand-cru-quality site in all but name, and one of the benchmark expressions of Mosel Riesling.
