The Story
Block 7 was planted in 1975, and it has been the backbone of Hendry Zinfandel since the family's very first vintage in 1992. Before that, the fruit went to other wineries and helped build George Hendry's reputation as one of Napa's great growers. Here it is blended with Block 22, a younger planting on the same bench-land west of the town of Napa, and the result is Zinfandel that behaves less like a jammy crowd-pleaser and more like a structured Napa red. The nose is perfumed, with black fruit, floral tea and a flash of orange peel; the palate is layered and firm. Proof that Zinfandel, farmed by someone who really knows the site, deserves a lot more respect than it usually gets.
