Nevada isn't on anyone's wine map, which is precisely why Matt Niess went there. Buffalo Creek Vineyard sits at 5,500 feet in the Carson Range, planted in decomposed granite and farmed with no spray and no till, conditions that would humble most European vines. Niess spent nearly a decade making Burgundian-style wine at Radio-Coteau before founding North American Press in 2019 to work exclusively with North America's native grapes and their hybrids. The Mentor is a field blend of Frontenac Noir and St. Croix, fermented with wild yeast and bottled unfined and unfiltered. It drinks with real lift and a cola-tinged bite, and a portion of every sale supports nonprofits protecting California wetlands and Indigenous cultures.
